Product Description:

Carboxymethylcellulose is a cellulose-derived polymer used as an ocular lubricant. It is not absorbed and has no pharmacological action; it works physically, by increasing the viscosity of the tear film so that it drains more slowly and stays on the eye longer, and by binding water at the ocular surface. The polymer also adheres to the corneal epithelium, which prolongs the effect beyond that of a simple saline drop.

It is used for dry eye — from reduced tear production, meibomian gland disease, contact lens wear, screen use or a dry environment — and for protection after minor irritation. At 0.5% it is a light-to-medium viscosity drop suitable for regular daytime use; higher concentrations blur vision more and are used less often or at night. It is safe to use as often as needed. The main consideration is the preservative: patients instilling drops many times a day accumulate significant exposure to benzalkonium chloride, which itself damages the ocular surface, so frequent users are moved to preservative-free presentations.

Sourcing notes. The commercial divide in this product is preservative-free unit-dose vials versus preserved multi-dose bottles, with multi-dose preservative-free bottles using one-way valve systems as a premium third option. Viscosity grade and osmolarity should be specified.
