Bromocriptine is a dopamine receptor agonist derived from ergot alkaloids. It is used in the treatment of Parkinson’s disease, hyperprolactinemia, acromegaly, and sometimes for Type 2 diabetes (as Cycloset). It works by stimulating dopamine receptors, reducing prolactin levels, and improving motor control in neurological disorders.

Product Description:

Bromocriptine is a semi-synthetic ergot alkaloid and dopamine D2 agonist, and among the oldest drugs of its class. Its best-established use is in hyperprolactinaemia and prolactinomas, where D2 agonism on pituitary lactotrophs suppresses prolactin secretion and shrinks the tumour. It is also used in acromegaly, as adjunctive therapy in Parkinson's disease, and — as a low-dose, quick-release formulation timed to the morning — in type 2 diabetes, where it is thought to reset a hypothalamic dopaminergic rhythm governing insulin sensitivity.

For prolactinomas it has largely been displaced by cabergoline, which is better tolerated and needs dosing only once or twice a week. It remains preferred by some clinicians when pregnancy is planned, because the safety experience in early pregnancy is longer. Nausea and postural hypotension limit the starting dose. As an ergot derivative it carries a fibrotic reaction risk.

Sourcing notes. The 0.8 mg strength is the quick-release diabetes formulation and is not interchangeable with 2.5 mg or 5 mg tablets, even when the dose is divided — the release profile is what makes it work. European regulators restricted use for lactation suppression after serious cardiovascular and neurological events, so that indication may be absent from local labelling. Generic tablets are widely available; the diabetes formulation is narrow-supply and mainly a US product.
