Bacitracin Topical Ointment is an antibiotic preparation used to prevent and treat minor skin infections caused by small cuts, scrapes, or burns. It works by stopping the growth of certain bacteria on the skin. This ointment is for external use only and helps promote faster healing while reducing the risk of infection. It is usually applied 1 to 3 times daily on the affected area.

Bacitracin is a polypeptide antibiotic active principally against Gram-positive organisms, interfering with bacterial cell wall synthesis by blocking the lipid carrier that transports peptidoglycan precursors across the membrane. It is used topically, typically at 500 units per gram, alone or combined with neomycin and polymyxin B in triple-antibiotic ointments.

The route matters absolutely. Systemic bacitracin is markedly nephrotoxic, which is why its use is confined to topical application. Injectable bacitracin was withdrawn in the United States in 2020 on precisely those grounds. Any enquiry for injectable bacitracin should be questioned rather than quoted.

Topical use is itself under some scrutiny: bacitracin is a recognised cause of allergic contact dermatitis, and rare anaphylaxis has been reported with application to broken skin or mucous membranes.

Sourcing notes. Topical semisolid manufacture is a straightforward capability and the product is inexpensive with wide availability. Potency is expressed in units rather than milligrams, and unit definitions have varied historically, so confirm the assay basis in the specification. Where the requirement is a combination ointment, the additional components govern registrability — neomycin in particular faces restrictions in some markets on sensitisation grounds.
