Product Description:

Teicoplanin is a glycopeptide antibiotic from the same family as vancomycin. It binds the D-alanyl-D-alanine terminus of cell wall precursors in Gram-positive bacteria, preventing cross-linking. Its spectrum is essentially that of vancomycin — MRSA, streptococci, enterococci, Clostridioides difficile orally — but its pharmacology differs in ways that matter in practice.

It binds plasma proteins strongly and has a long half-life, so after loading doses it can be given once daily, and by intramuscular as well as intravenous injection, which supports outpatient therapy. It causes less nephrotoxicity than vancomycin and does not produce the histamine-related infusion reaction known as red man syndrome, so it needs no slow infusion. Against that, loading is essential — underdosing at the start is the commonest cause of failure — and trough level monitoring is advised for deep-seated infection such as endocarditis or bone and joint infection.

Sourcing notes. Teicoplanin is registered across Europe, Asia and Latin America but has never been approved in the US, which shapes the manufacturer base: most production is in Europe, India, Korea and China. It is a fermentation product, so the impurity profile and the ratio of its several components vary between manufacturers and belong in the specification.
