Streptozocin is a nitrosourea chemotherapy that damages DNA in dividing cells. It is taken up strongly by the insulin-producing beta cells of the pancreas, which is why its main use is in pancreatic neuroendocrine tumours (islet cell tumours). It is usually combined with fluorouracil or doxorubicin and given by intravenous infusion in cycles.

The drug can harm the kidneys, so kidney function and urine protein are checked before each dose. It can also cause marked nausea and changes in blood sugar. Each 1 g vial is reconstituted and given in a specialist oncology setting.
