Product Description:

Leukaemic cells in acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) cannot make enough of the amino acid asparagine and depend on what is in the blood. Asparaginase breaks down that asparagine and starves the cells. Pegaspargase is asparaginase attached to polyethylene glycol (PEG). The PEG keeps the enzyme in the body for much longer, so one dose lasts around two weeks instead of a few days, and allergic reactions are less frequent than with native L-asparaginase.

It is a core part of modern ALL protocols for children and young adults and is included on the WHO Model List of Essential Medicines. It is given by intramuscular injection or intravenous infusion, and asparaginase activity in the blood is often measured to confirm that the dose is working.

Sourcing notes. Supply is concentrated in a small number of manufacturers, and several countries still rely on native L-asparaginase because pegaspargase is not registered or affordable.
