Product Description:
Cromolyn sodium, chemically known as cromoglicic acid sodium salt, is a mast cell stabilizer originally derived from khellin, a natural compound extracted from the herb Ammi visnaga. It was first introduced in 1969 as an inhalation therapy for asthma and remains an important preventive treatment in allergic and mast cell–related conditions. Cromolyn sodium works by inhibiting the release of inflammatory mediators such as histamine and leukotrienes from sensitized mast cells, thereby reducing allergic and inflammatory responses.
It is widely used for the prophylactic management of bronchial asthma, allergic rhinitis, allergic conjunctivitis, and mastocytosis. In certain patients, it may also help improve symptoms such as diarrhea, flushing, headaches, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, urticaria, and itching associated with mast cell disorders. However, it is not indicated for the relief of acute asthma attacks and should be used regularly as a preventive therapy.
Cromolyn sodium is available in multiple dosage forms, including inhalation solutions, nasal sprays, oral solutions, and ophthalmic drops. It is approved for asthma prophylaxis and allergic conditions, with additional off-label applications in selected inflammatory and food-related allergic disorders.
