Cromolyn Sodium is a mast cell stabilizer used to prevent and manage allergic conditions. Unlike antihistamines or corticosteroids, it works by inhibiting the release of histamine and other inflammatory mediators from mast cells, thus preventing allergic reactions rather than treating symptoms after they appear.

Cromolyn sodium (sodium cromoglicate) is a mast cell stabiliser, and its mechanism sets it apart from every other product in this category. Rather than blocking histamine after release, it inhibits degranulation of sensitised mast cells, preventing the release of histamine and other mediators in the first place. The practical consequence is that cromolyn is prophylactic, not a rescue treatment: it requires regular dosing and its benefit builds over days to weeks rather than minutes.

That distinction is routinely misunderstood by patients and, importantly for a distributor, by prescribers unfamiliar with the class. It is supplied as nasal spray, ophthalmic drops and nebuliser solution, each addressing a different site of allergic response.

Cromolyn's safety profile is favourable, with minimal systemic absorption, which supports over-the-counter status for the nasal presentation in several markets while the ophthalmic and inhalation forms more often remain prescription-only.

Sourcing notes. The three presentations are entirely different manufacturing propositions. Nebuliser solution requires sterile small-volume parenteral-grade capability; ophthalmic drops require sterile ophthalmic approval; the nasal spray needs metered-dose device assembly and, in most markets, device-specific documentation. Very few sites hold all three. Confirm which presentation is quoted and which plant will make it before comparing prices.
