Sodium Chloride Inhalation Solution is a sterile, preservative-free saline solution formulated for inhalation via a nebulizer. It helps moisturize the airways, loosen mucus, and improve airway clearance in patients with respiratory conditions.

Product Description:

Hypertonic saline for nebulisation is sterile, preservative-free sodium chloride solution at concentrations above physiological. Inhaled as a mist, it draws water osmotically onto the airway surface, rehydrating the layer of mucus that sits on the cilia. In cystic fibrosis and bronchiectasis that layer is dehydrated and sticky, so cilia cannot clear it; restoring its water content makes the mucus easier to cough up and improves clearance.

In cystic fibrosis, 7% saline given twice daily reduces exacerbations and modestly improves lung function, and it is a standard part of airway clearance. Lower concentrations are used in bronchiectasis and in infants, where tolerance is the constraint. The main adverse effect is bronchospasm and cough, which is why a bronchodilator is given beforehand and why the first dose is usually supervised with spirometry. Concentrations are not interchangeable: the strength chosen balances effect against tolerability, and patients are often stepped up gradually.

Sourcing notes. This is a sterile, preservative-free product supplied in single-use ampoules for nebulisation, and it is a different product from saline for injection or irrigation. The concentration must be stated unambiguously on any quotation. Some products include a hyaluronate additive to improve tolerability, which is a separate registration.
