Product Description:

Rebamipide is a quinolinone gastroprotective agent. Rather than suppressing acid, it strengthens the mucosa: it increases the stomach's own prostaglandin production, stimulates mucus secretion, scavenges oxygen free radicals and reduces inflammatory cell infiltration. This makes it a mucosal-defence drug, used alongside or after acid suppression rather than in place of it.

It is used for gastric ulcer and to promote healing of mucosal lesions in acute gastritis and acute exacerbations of chronic gastritis, typically 100 mg three times daily. It is also widely used in parts of Asia to protect against NSAID-induced mucosal injury, including small-bowel damage that PPIs do not prevent. It is well tolerated; rash, constipation, raised liver enzymes and rare blood count changes are reported. An eye-drop formulation of rebamipide is used for dry eye in Japan, but it is a different product with a separate registration.

Sourcing notes. Rebamipide originated in Japan and is registered widely in Japan, Korea, China, India, Russia and elsewhere in Asia, but not in the US or EU. Generic tablets are plentiful and priced competitively in those markets. Registration in the destination market is the first question, and the oral tablet should not be confused with the ophthalmic product.
