Product Description:

Purified Vero cell rabies vaccine is an inactivated viral vaccine. The virus is grown on Vero cells, a continuous cell line from African green monkey kidney, then inactivated, purified and freeze-dried. The 2.5 IU on this page is the minimum potency per intramuscular dose that WHO sets for rabies vaccines. Each vial is reconstituted with its own diluent just before use. Cell-culture vaccines like this replaced older nerve-tissue vaccines, which WHO advises should no longer be produced or used.

It is used for post-exposure prophylaxis after a bite or scratch from a suspect animal, and for pre-exposure vaccination of people at ongoing risk. After exposure, thorough wound washing comes first, and category III exposures also need rabies immunoglobulin at the wound. The vaccine goes intramuscularly into the deltoid, or the thigh in young children, never the buttock. WHO also endorses shorter intradermal regimens that save vaccine in busy clinics. Pregnancy is not a contraindication to post-exposure use.

Sourcing notes. Rabies vaccine needs an unbroken cold chain at 2-8 °C and must not be frozen. WHO prequalification is usually required for UN and donor-funded tenders. Each lot needs release by the national control laboratory of the producing country and acceptance by the importing regulator. Ask for a CTD dossier, lot release certificate, CoA per lot, GMP certificate, CoPP and shipment temperature records. Check whether the label covers intradermal use if you plan those schedules, and whether vials carry vaccine vial monitors. Give dose presentation, diluent, pack size, label language and shelf life on arrival.
