Product Description:
Human Rabies Immunoglobulin (HRIG) is a plasma-derived biological product used for post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) in individuals exposed to the rabies virus through animal bites or scratches. It provides immediate passive immunity by supplying rabies virus–neutralizing antibodies directly at the site of exposure. This protection is crucial during the early phase of treatment until the body develops its own active immune response following rabies vaccination. HRIG is recommended particularly for category III exposures, which include severe bites, scratches, or contamination of mucous membranes with saliva from potentially rabid animals.
The immunoglobulin is derived from human plasma collected from donors with high levels of rabies antibodies and is purified to ensure safety and efficacy. It is typically administered once at the beginning of rabies post-exposure prophylaxis, with as much of the calculated dose as possible infiltrated around the wound site and the remainder given intramuscularly. When used together with a full course of rabies vaccine and proper wound management, HRIG significantly reduces the risk of rabies infection. Its role in providing rapid protection makes it an essential component of modern rabies prevention protocols worldwide.
