Podophyllotoxin (PPT) is the active pharmaceutical ingredient in Podofilox, a topical medication widely used for the treatment of external genital warts associated with human papillomavirus (HPV) and molluscum contagiosum infections. It is intended only for visible external lesions and is not recommended for internal HPV infections without warts. Podophyllotoxin is a non-alkaloid lignan derived from the roots and rhizomes of plants belonging to the Podophyllum genus. It works as a potent antimitotic agent by inhibiting cellular and viral DNA replication, disrupting microtubule formation, and preventing cell division, which leads to controlled destruction of wart tissue.
