Pethidine is a pain relieving medicine. It effectively alleviates moderate to severe pain.

Product Description:

Pethidine, known as meperidine in the United States, is a synthetic opioid agonist at the mu receptor, used for moderate to severe pain. The 50 mg per millilitre ampoule is the standard analgesic concentration, giving a usual adult dose in one or two millilitres by intramuscular or slow intravenous injection.

It acts quickly and lasts two to four hours. Its decline in use comes from normeperidine, a metabolite with no pain-relieving effect, a long half-life and neurotoxicity — tremor, myoclonus, agitation and seizures — which accumulates with repeated doses and in renal impairment, and which naloxone does not reverse. It also has mild anticholinergic and local anaesthetic activity and, unusually for an opioid, can cause tachycardia rather than bradycardia. Its remaining accepted uses are single doses for shivering and rigors, and obstetric analgesia in countries where that practice continues. Combination with MAO inhibitors is contraindicated, and caution applies with serotonergic drugs.

Sourcing notes. A Schedule I narcotic under the 1961 UN Single Convention. Every shipment needs import and export authorisations within national quotas, with secure custody and record-keeping. Ampoule strength must be stated clearly on any quotation, since 25 mg/mL and 50 mg/mL products both exist.
