Product Description:

Insulin degludec is a basal insulin analogue. After injection it forms long chains of insulin molecules under the skin, which break down slowly and release insulin steadily for more than 42 hours. The result is a flat, predictable background insulin level with fewer night-time lows than older basal insulins, and the dose time can vary from day to day when needed.

It is used once daily in type 1 diabetes (always with mealtime insulin) and type 2 diabetes, alone or with tablets or GLP-1 medicines. The 200 units/ml pen is used by patients on high doses, as it delivers the same dose in half the volume. Degludec is also sold in fixed combinations with insulin aspart and with liraglutide.

Biosimilar insulin degludec has started to reach markets, for example with a biosimilar listing on Australia's PBS from July 2026, and more manufacturers have biosimilars in development.
