Product Description:

This tablet combines metformin, the usual first medicine for type 2 diabetes, with empagliflozin, an SGLT2 inhibitor. Metformin reduces the amount of glucose released by the liver and improves the body's response to insulin. Empagliflozin removes extra glucose through the urine. Combining them in one tablet cuts the number of tablets a patient takes, which helps people keep taking their treatment.

It is used for adults with type 2 diabetes whose sugar is not controlled on metformin alone, or who already take both medicines separately. It is usually taken twice a day with meals to reduce stomach upset from metformin. Empagliflozin also lowers the risk of heart failure admissions and slows kidney decline. Kidney function is checked before and during treatment because of metformin.

Sourcing notes. Generic versions are marketed in India since empagliflozin's patent expired there in 2025. In the US, generic entry for this combination is expected from April 2027.
