Product Description:
Etonogestrel is a synthetic progestin widely used as a long-acting reversible contraceptive for women. It is most commonly available as a subdermal implant that is placed under the skin of the upper arm and marketed under the brand names Nexplanon and Implanon. Once implanted, etonogestrel is released steadily into the bloodstream, providing continuous contraceptive protection for at least three years, with clinical evidence supporting effectiveness for up to four or five years in some cases.
Etonogestrel works primarily by inhibiting ovulation, preventing the ovary from releasing an egg each month. It also thickens cervical mucus, making it difficult for sperm to reach the egg, and alters the uterine lining, reducing the likelihood of implantation. Together, these mechanisms provide highly effective prevention of pregnancy. The contraceptive efficacy of etonogestrel implants exceeds 99%, making them one of the most reliable birth control methods available.
In addition to implants, etonogestrel is also used in combination with ethinylestradiol as a vaginal ring, marketed under brands such as NuvaRing and Circlet. After removal of the implant or discontinuation of use, fertility typically returns quickly. Etonogestrel does not protect against HIV infection or other sexually transmitted diseases.
