Product Description:

The levonorgestrel implant is two thin, flexible rods placed under the skin of the upper arm. They release the hormone levonorgestrel slowly, which thickens cervical mucus and stops ovulation. It is one of the most effective forms of contraception, and fertility returns quickly after removal.

A trained health worker inserts the rods in a few minutes under local anaesthetic. Depending on the product it lasts 3 to 5 years. Irregular bleeding is the most common side effect and the main reason for early removal, so counselling before insertion matters. Removal also needs a trained provider.

Two-rod levonorgestrel implants are made by a small number of manufacturers, and most volume goes through UNFPA, USAID-funded and national family planning tenders that require WHO prequalification or equivalent approval.
