Product Description:

Esomeprazole is the S-enantiomer of omeprazole and belongs to the proton pump inhibitor class. It binds the H+/K+ ATPase in parietal cells and shuts down the final step of acid secretion. On this page it comes as the magnesium salt in 20 mg and 40 mg delayed-release capsules, with strengths expressed as esomeprazole. Inside each capsule are enteric-coated pellets. Because the drug breaks down quickly in acid, the coating carries it past the stomach. The capsule can be opened and the intact pellets sprinkled on apple purée for people who struggle to swallow.

Esomeprazole capsules are used for reflux disease, healing and maintenance of erosive oesophagitis, Helicobacter pylori eradication with antibiotics, ulcers linked to NSAID use, and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. A dose is taken at least an hour before a meal. Clopidogrel and esomeprazole should not be used together because the PPI weakens clopidogrel activation. Reduced gastric acid also cuts absorption of atazanavir and some antifungals. Long use brings cautions on magnesium, vitamin B12 and fractures.
