Product Description:

Meropenem-vaborbactam pairs the carbapenem meropenem with vaborbactam, a boronic-acid beta-lactamase inhibitor. Vaborbactam is especially effective against the KPC carbapenemase, the enzyme behind many outbreaks of carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae. With vaborbactam present, meropenem regains its activity against these bacteria.

It is approved for complicated urinary tract infections including pyelonephritis, and in the EU also for complicated intra-abdominal infections, hospital-acquired pneumonia and other infections with limited options. Each dose of 4 g (2 g meropenem plus 2 g vaborbactam, from two vials) is infused over three hours every eight hours. It is not active against metallo-beta-lactamases (NDM, VIM) or OXA-48.

Handling, dosing and buyer checklist

Storage and preparation. Vials are stored at room temperature. Each vial (1 g meropenem and 1 g vaborbactam) is reconstituted and then diluted in an infusion bag; a full dose uses two vials.

How it is given. The usual adult dose is 4 g (2 g meropenem and 2 g vaborbactam) every 8 hours, infused over three hours, with lower doses when kidney function is reduced. Treatment usually lasts up to 14 days. It is reserved for confirmed or strongly suspected infections with KPC-producing bacteria.

What to ask a supplier. Proof of authorised originator supply, the registration status or named-patient route for the destination, remaining shelf life, and pack size. Because each dose needs two vials, calculate quantities as vials per patient per day (six) rather than doses.
