Product Description:

Docosanol is a saturated 22-carbon fatty alcohol, and it works quite differently from nucleoside antivirals. It does not attack the virus or its enzymes; it inserts itself into the host cell membrane and changes its composition so that the herpes virus envelope cannot fuse with it. Blocking entry rather than replication means resistance is not expected to develop.

It is used for recurrent cold sores on the lips and face, applied five times daily from the first sign of a tingle until healing. Started at the prodrome it shortens healing time by around a day compared with placebo — a modest effect, but meaningful to people who get frequent, visible outbreaks, and it is available without prescription in the markets that register it. It is very well tolerated; local application site reactions are the only common complaint. It is for cutaneous use only and not for the eyes or inside the mouth.

Sourcing notes. An over-the-counter product in the US and several other markets, which puts the buyer in retail rather than pharmaceutical wholesale. Registration elsewhere is limited — in much of Europe topical aciclovir holds this niche. The cream base and tube presentation carry much of the brand value in a self-care category.
