Product Description:

Divalproex sodium delayed-release tablets are the original oral form: an enteric-coated tablet that passes through the stomach intact and releases valproate in the small intestine. The coating exists to reduce nausea and gastric irritation, not to extend the effect, so these tablets are taken two or three times daily — unlike the extended-release form, which is once daily.

It is used for epilepsy, acute mania in bipolar disorder, and migraine prevention. Valproate works through several mechanisms: raising brain GABA, blocking sodium channels and modulating calcium currents, which gives it activity across a wide range of seizure types. Serum levels are measured to guide dosing. Safety requirements are the same as for the extended-release form: liver function and blood counts monitored, caution in mitochondrial disease and in children under two, and above all the pregnancy restrictions that now govern valproate use in most regulated markets because of its high risk of malformation and developmental problems.

Sourcing notes. Delayed-release and extended-release tablets are separate registrations with different dosing frequency and bioavailability, and must not be substituted for one another without a dose adjustment. The enteric coating's integrity is the critical quality attribute and requires acid-resistance testing.
