Product Description:
Bethanechol chloride is a parasympathomimetic choline carbamate that selectively stimulates muscarinic receptors without exerting activity on nicotinic receptors. Unlike acetylcholine, bethanechol is resistant to hydrolysis by cholinesterase enzymes, resulting in a longer duration of action. The drug’s name reflects its chemical structure as the urethane of beta-methylcholine. Bethanechol is marketed globally under several brand names, including Duvoid, Myotonachol, Urecholine, and Urocarb.
Clinically, bethanechol is used to stimulate smooth muscle activity in the urinary bladder and gastrointestinal tract. It is administered orally or subcutaneously for the treatment of non-obstructive urinary retention associated with general anesthesia, diabetic bladder neuropathy, or as a side effect of certain antidepressant medications. Bethanechol is also indicated for conditions involving reduced gastrointestinal motility, where it helps restore normal muscular tone and bowel function. Additionally, it has been used to alleviate symptoms of dry mouth due to its cholinergic activity.
Bethanechol acts by activating muscarinic receptors in the bladder, promoting detrusor muscle contraction and facilitating urination, while simultaneously enhancing gastrointestinal motility. Its use is recommended only after mechanical obstruction has been carefully excluded as a potential cause of symptoms.
