Acetohydroxamic acid (Lithostat) is used as an adjunct therapy to prevent kidney stones and manage chronic urinary tract infections caused by urease‑producing bacteria. It works by inhibiting bacterial urease, reducing urine alkalinity and struvite stone formation.

Product Description:

Acetohydroxamic acid inhibits urease, the bacterial enzyme that splits urea into ammonia and carbon dioxide. The logic is indirect but precise: certain bacteria, chiefly Proteus species, produce urease, and the ammonia they generate makes the urine strongly alkaline. In alkaline urine, magnesium ammonium phosphate crystallises out as struvite, forming large branching stones that fill the renal collecting system and shelter the bacteria inside them, so the infection cannot be cleared.

It is used as an adjunct in chronic urea-splitting urinary infection where the stones cannot be fully removed surgically, breaking the cycle by preventing the alkalinisation that feeds stone growth. It does not replace antibiotics or stone removal. Adverse effects are common and limit its use: haemolytic anaemia, deep vein thrombosis, headache, nausea, and a rash if alcohol is taken. Regular blood counts are required, and it is contraindicated in pregnancy and in poor renal function.
