Azelnidipine is a medicine used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) and to prevent angina (heart-related chest pain). It is known as a calcium channel blocker and helps to lower blood pressure and reduce the workload of the heart. This helps prevent heart attacks and strokes.

Product Description:

Azelnidipine is a long-acting dihydropyridine calcium channel blocker developed in Japan. Like other dihydropyridines it relaxes arterial smooth muscle by blocking L-type calcium channels. What distinguishes it is a slow onset and high lipophilicity, so it accumulates in vascular tissue and acts for a long time without the abrupt vasodilation that causes reflex tachycardia. Heart rate tends to fall slightly rather than rise, which is unusual for this class and makes it attractive where tachycardia is a concern.

It is used once daily for hypertension, and it is also used in angina in some markets. Adverse effects are those of the class — headache, flushing, ankle oedema, palpitations — though generally milder because of the gradual onset. It is metabolised by CYP3A4, so grapefruit juice and strong inhibitors raise exposure, and it should not be combined with some antifungals in certain labelling.
