Product Description:

Atomoxetine is a selective noradrenaline reuptake inhibitor and the first non-stimulant approved for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. By blocking the noradrenaline transporter in prefrontal cortex — where that transporter also clears dopamine — it raises both catecholamines in the region that governs attention and impulse control, without the striatal dopamine increase that gives stimulants their abuse potential.

Onset is slow. Meaningful benefit takes two to four weeks and full effect up to twelve, so it suits patients who cannot take stimulants, have co-existing tics or anxiety, or carry a substance-misuse risk, rather than those who need a rapid response. It is metabolised by CYP2D6; poor metabolisers reach roughly tenfold higher exposure, and strong 2D6 inhibitors such as fluoxetine and paroxetine have the same effect. It carries a boxed warning for suicidal ideation in children and adolescents, plus warnings on hepatotoxicity and on blood pressure and heart rate.
