It works by relaxing the smooth muscles of the airways, leading to widening of the bronchi and improved airflow. Albuterol is available in inhalers, dry powder inhalers, and nebulizer solutions, providing fast-acting relief from wheezing, shortness of breath, and chest tightness. It is generally well-tolerated, with common side effects including tremor, headache, and increased heart rate.

Albuterol is a short-acting beta-2 agonist and the reference reliever medication in asthma and COPD worldwide. It produces bronchodilation within minutes by relaxing airway smooth muscle, and appears on the WHO Model List of Essential Medicines. Presentations divide into pressurised metered-dose inhalers, typically 90 mcg per actuation, and nebuliser solutions at 0.63, 1.25 and 2.5 mg per 3 mL.

A naming point that causes real confusion in international trade. "Albuterol" is the United States adopted name. The International Nonproprietary Name, used across Europe, India and most of the world, is salbutamol. They are the same molecule. Enquiries and tender documents routinely use one name while the manufacturer's dossier uses the other, and specifications occasionally list both as though they were alternatives. Confirm which term the destination regulator uses in its own registration, since that governs the labelling.

Sourcing notes. The inhaler and the nebuliser solution are entirely different manufacturing propositions. Pressurised inhalers require propellant handling capability, device assembly and dose-uniformity validation; nebuliser solution requires sterile small-volume capability. Very few plants hold both, so confirm which is quoted. A further consideration: the industry is transitioning away from high global-warming-potential HFA propellants under environmental regulation in the EU and elsewhere, and propellant specification is becoming a registration question rather than a purely technical one.
