Product Description:

Acyclovir (aciclovir) is a guanosine analogue that only becomes active inside cells infected with herpes simplex virus. The viral enzyme thymidine kinase starts its activation, and the active form then blocks viral DNA polymerase, so the virus stops copying itself while healthy skin is largely unaffected.

The 5% cream is used for cold sores (herpes labialis). It works best when applied at the first tingle or itch, five times a day for about four days, and it shortens the outbreak rather than preventing future ones. It is not a substitute for tablets in genital herpes, shingles or in people with weakened immunity, where oral or intravenous acyclovir is used. Mild stinging or dryness at the application site is the usual side effect.
