Vitamin C, ascorbic acid, is a water-soluble vitamin that humans cannot synthesise. It is a cofactor for enzymes that make collagen, carnitine and some neurotransmitters, an antioxidant, and it improves the absorption of non-haem iron from plant foods. Severe deficiency causes scurvy, with bleeding gums, poor wound healing and fatigue; it still occurs in people with very restricted diets, alcohol use disorder or malabsorption.

A 50 mg tablet is a low, nutritional dose, close to daily requirement, suited to preventing deficiency rather than high-dose supplementation. Regular vitamin C does not prevent colds in the general population, though it may slightly shorten them. It is very safe at this dose. At high doses, vitamin C can cause digestive upset, and in susceptible people it increases oxalate kidney stone risk. People with haemochromatosis should avoid added vitamin C, as it increases iron absorption.

Ascorbic acid degrades with moisture, heat and light, so stability through shelf life, packaging and overage policy are the key quality points. Pharmacopoeial grade ascorbic acid should be specified, and the source — commonly China — may matter for some buyers.
