Capsule contains the active constituent cholecalciferol. It is used to prevent and treat Vitamin D deficiency. Vitamin D deficiency occurs when lifestyle or diet does not provide enough Vitamin D or when your body requires more of it. It may also be given for certain bone conditions such as osteoporosis (thinning of bone) along with other medicines. Vitamin D is important for bone health and helps the body in the absorption of calcium.

Cholecalciferol, vitamin D3, is converted first in the liver to calcifediol and then in the kidney to calcitriol, the active hormone that controls intestinal absorption of calcium and phosphate and keeps bone properly mineralised. It is the preferred form for supplementation because it raises blood vitamin D levels more effectively and for longer than vitamin D2.

Capsules are used to prevent and treat deficiency, including in older adults, people with limited sun exposure or darker skin, and those with malabsorption. Dose depends on the goal: daily maintenance doses are modest, while deficiency is corrected with higher daily or weekly doses under supervision. Large trials in people with adequate levels have not shown wider benefits, so treatment is best guided by need. Excessive dosing over time causes hypercalcaemia and kidney damage, and patients with granulomatous disease or certain kidney conditions are at higher risk.

Sourcing notes. Buyers should specify the strength, since products range from 400 IU to 60,000 IU per capsule and regulatory status often depends on the dose. Soft-gel capsules in oil are standard.
