Product Description:

Vamorolone is described as a dissociative steroid. It binds the same glucocorticoid receptor as prednisone but acts as a partial agonist, and it does not activate the mineralocorticoid receptor or drive the gene transcription responsible for several steroid side effects. The aim is to keep the anti-inflammatory benefit that makes corticosteroids the backbone of Duchenne muscular dystrophy care while removing the toxicity that makes families dread them.

It is used for Duchenne muscular dystrophy in patients aged two and over, as a daily oral suspension. In trials it improved motor function comparably to prednisone, with less growth suppression in children and less loss of bone mineral density — the two effects that most damage long-term outcomes in boys treated with steroids for years. Behavioural changes, cushingoid features and adrenal suppression can still occur, so it is not steroid-free treatment, and it must not be stopped abruptly. Growth, blood pressure and bone health are monitored.
