Terbutaline is used to relieve symptoms of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) such as coughing, wheezing and breathlessness. It helps in relaxing the muscles of the air passages, thus widening it and making it easier to breathe.

Product Description:

Terbutaline is a short-acting beta-2 agonist producing bronchodilation through airway smooth muscle relaxation, used in asthma and COPD. It is supplied as 2.5 mg tablets, as a subcutaneous injection, and as inhalation presentations. Oral beta-2 agonists have been largely displaced by the inhaled route in guideline practice, since inhalation delivers drug to the airway directly with far lower systemic exposure, but oral terbutaline retains a place where inhaler technique is unreliable or devices are not available.

An important restriction concerning obstetric use. Terbutaline has been used off-label as a tocolytic to suppress preterm labour. The US FDA issued a boxed warning against prolonged tocolytic use — beyond 48 to 72 hours — and against any use of oral terbutaline for that purpose, following reports of maternal cardiac events and death. Other regulators have issued comparable restrictions. Where terbutaline is supplied into obstetric channels, the labelling must carry the current restriction, and a buyer procuring it for tocolysis should be told the position explicitly rather than left to discover it.

Sourcing notes. Terbutaline is off-patent, inexpensive and widely manufactured, with substantial volume in markets where inhaled therapy is less accessible. The tablet, injection and inhalation presentations require different plant approvals; confirm which is quoted and that the specific site holds the corresponding scope.
