Product Description:
Sodium fluoride is an inorganic fluoride salt widely used in dentistry and public health programs to help prevent dental caries (tooth decay). It is commonly applied topically through professional dental products such as varnishes, gels, and rinses, and it is also used in municipal water fluoridation systems in many countries. The primary role of sodium fluoride is to strengthen tooth enamel and make it more resistant to acid attacks that can lead to cavities.
When applied to the teeth, fluoride ions interact with calcium present in the hydroxyapatite crystals of the enamel. This interaction helps form a more acid-resistant structure, supporting the remineralization of early enamel damage and reducing the risk of further demineralization. By reinforcing the enamel surface, sodium fluoride acts as a protective barrier against acids produced by bacteria in the mouth after the consumption of sugary or acidic foods.
In addition to strengthening enamel, sodium fluoride may also help inhibit acid production by certain oral bacteria that contribute to tooth decay. Because of these protective properties, sodium fluoride is widely used in preventive dental care programs for both children and adults, particularly those at higher risk of developing cavities. Its use in professional dental treatments and community health initiatives makes it an important agent in maintaining overall oral health.
