Product Description:
Nateglinide is an oral antidiabetic medication used to manage blood glucose levels in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. It belongs to the meglitinide class of drugs and works by stimulating insulin release from the pancreas in response to meals, thereby helping control postprandial blood sugar levels.
The mechanism of action of nateglinide involves closing ATP-dependent potassium channels in the membrane of pancreatic β cells. This closure leads to depolarization of the β cells, which triggers the opening of voltage-gated calcium channels. The resulting influx of calcium promotes the fusion of insulin-containing vesicles with the cell membrane, leading to the secretion of insulin into the bloodstream.
By enhancing insulin secretion, nateglinide helps lower blood glucose effectively after meals and supports overall glycemic control. It is typically taken shortly before meals and is used alongside diet and exercise for optimal diabetes management. Regular use as prescribed helps reduce the risk of long-term complications associated with uncontrolled type 2 diabetes.
