Product Description:

Moxifloxacin is a later-generation fluoroquinolone that inhibits DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, killing a broad range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. This page covers the 0.5% ophthalmic solution, 5 mg/mL, applied as eye drops. The topical form puts high concentrations on the conjunctiva and cornea without exposing the whole body, and the EU restrictions on systemic fluoroquinolones do not cover eye drops. Some formulations are self-preserved without benzalkonium chloride, which matters to patients sensitive to that preservative.

The labelled use is bacterial conjunctivitis caused by susceptible organisms. A typical course is one drop three times a day for seven days, though local labels set the exact regimen and minimum age. Contact lenses are not worn while the eye is infected. The dropper tip must not touch the eye, lids or fingers. With other eye drops, a gap of about five minutes between products is advised. Irritation, discomfort and dryness are the common side effects. Infection that fails to settle needs review.

Sourcing notes. Moxifloxacin eye drops are prescription-only in most markets. Ask for a CTD or ACTD dossier with sterility data, preservative efficacy or self-preservation evidence, and in-use stability after opening. Bottles are usually 5 mL LDPE droppers at room temperature; cold chain is not needed. Compare pH, osmolality and buffer system with the reference product, since many regulators expect a generic eye solution to match it in composition.
