Metoclopramide 5 mg and 10 mg tablets are the standard adult form of this antiemetic and prokinetic. It blocks dopamine D2 receptors in the chemoreceptor trigger zone, easing nausea, and in the upper gut, where it raises lower oesophageal sphincter tone and hastens gastric emptying. The 10 mg tablet matches the usual adult dose, so most hospitals stock it. The 5 mg strength allows reduced doses in renal or hepatic impairment and frail elderly patients.
European labels cover adults with postoperative nausea and vomiting, nausea from chemotherapy or radiotherapy, and symptomatic relief in acute migraine. The usual dose is 10 mg up to three times daily, maximum 30 mg a day, normally for no more than five days, with at least six hours between doses. US labels add diabetic gastroparesis and short-term reflux use, with a boxed warning against use beyond 12 weeks because of tardive dyskinesia. Do not combine with levodopa.
