Meprobamate is a carbamate-derived central nervous system depressant that produces calming, sedative and muscle-relaxant effects. It is used for short-term relief of anxiety or tension and can also have mild muscle-relaxant properties.

Meprobamate is a carbamate central nervous system depressant introduced in the 1950s as the first widely prescribed anti-anxiety drug, and for a time one of the most prescribed medicines in the world. It acts on GABA-A receptors at a site distinct from the benzodiazepine site, producing sedation, anxiolysis and muscle relaxation, with effects closer to barbiturates than to benzodiazepines.

Its history is the reason it is now rare. It produces tolerance and physical dependence, withdrawal can include seizures and delirium, and it has a narrow margin in overdose, where it causes deep coma and cardiovascular collapse that is difficult to treat. Once benzodiazepines arrived with a wider safety margin, meprobamate's risk-benefit balance no longer justified routine use. European regulators withdrew it across the EU in 2012, concluding that the risks outweighed the benefits. In the US it remains a controlled substance and is still available, but prescribing is minimal.

Sourcing notes. Registration is limited and has been actively withdrawn in major markets, so the destination country's current status must be confirmed before any enquiry is pursued. It is a Schedule IV psychotropic under the 1971 UN Convention where it remains available, requiring import and export authorisations.
