Product Description:

Lofexidine is an alpha-2A adrenergic agonist. Opioid withdrawal is largely a noradrenergic storm: opioids suppress firing in the locus coeruleus, and when they are removed abruptly that nucleus fires excessively, producing the cramps, sweating, chills, tachycardia, gooseflesh and agitation that make withdrawal so intolerable. Stimulating the inhibitory alpha-2 receptors there restores the brake without touching opioid receptors at all.

It is used to reduce the physical symptoms of opioid withdrawal in adults during abrupt discontinuation, for up to about two weeks. It is not a treatment for opioid use disorder and does not reduce craving — its role is to make the withdrawal period survivable, usually as a bridge to naltrexone or to a structured programme. Hypotension, bradycardia, dizziness, somnolence and dry mouth are expected and dose-limiting; blood pressure is monitored and the dose tapered rather than stopped abruptly.
