Product Description:
Levoleucovorin is the pharmacologically active levo-isomer of leucovorin calcium, used as an adjunct in cancer chemotherapy to enhance efficacy and reduce toxicity. It is an active metabolite of folic acid that does not require metabolic conversion by dihydrofolate reductase, allowing for immediate participation in cellular folate pathways.
Levoleucovorin is primarily used to counteract the toxic effects of folic acid antagonist drugs, such as high-dose methotrexate, providing a “rescue” effect that protects healthy cells while allowing the antitumor activity of chemotherapy to continue. In combination with fluorouracil and its derivatives, levoleucovorin potentiates anticancer effects by stabilizing the binding of the drug’s active metabolite to its target enzyme, thereby prolonging the cytotoxic activity against malignant cells.
Available in both oral and injectable forms, levoleucovorin is commonly used in colorectal, gastrointestinal, and other solid tumor regimens under the supervision of oncology specialists. Its targeted mechanism allows for enhanced therapeutic outcomes while minimizing collateral damage to normal cells, making it an essential component of many folate-based chemotherapy protocols.
