Ivermectin is in a class of medications called anthelmintics. It treats strongyloidosis by killing the worms in the intestines. It treats onchocerciasis by killing the developing worms. Ivermectin does not kill the adult worms that cause onchocerciasis and therefore it will not cure this type of infection.

Product Description:

Ivermectin is a macrocyclic lactone derived from avermectins produced by Streptomyces avermitilis. It binds glutamate-gated chloride channels in invertebrate nerve and muscle, causing paralysis and death of the parasite. Those channels do not exist in mammals, and the related mammalian channels are protected behind the blood-brain barrier, which is why the drug is highly toxic to worms and well tolerated by the host.

It is active against gastrointestinal roundworms, lungworms, mites, lice and some larval stages across a wide range of species, and in human medicine against strongyloidiasis, onchocerciasis and scabies. It does not kill adult Onchocerca worms, so treatment is repeated over years in that setting. Dosing is strictly by weight. Collies and related herding breeds carrying an MDR1 mutation lack the barrier protection and suffer severe neurological toxicity at doses other dogs tolerate.

Sourcing notes. Long off patent and inexpensive. Buyers should confirm the intended species, since veterinary and human presentations differ in strength and excipients and are separately registered. Food-producing animals carry mandatory withdrawal periods before milk or meat may enter the food chain, and these differ by market — a compliance requirement, not a recommendation.
