Product Description:
Iron injection 50 mg/mL holds ferric iron in a carbohydrate complex, so it can enter the blood without releasing free iron too fast. The reference product here is a low molecular weight iron dextran, given by intravenous infusion or injection and, in some labels, deep intramuscular injection. Ferric carboxymaltose also comes at 50 mg/mL, while iron sucrose is usually 20 mg/mL. These complexes differ in dose limits and infusion times and are not interchangeable.
It is used for iron deficiency when oral iron fails, is not tolerated or cannot meet the need, as in chronic kidney disease, inflammatory bowel disease or before surgery. Ferritin and transferrin saturation confirm the diagnosis. The total dose follows body weight and haemoglobin deficit. Hypersensitivity is the main risk, so European guidance says IV iron is given only where resuscitation facilities are at hand, with observation for at least 30 minutes. It is avoided in the first trimester of pregnancy.
Sourcing notes. First name the iron complex, as iron injection covers several products with separate dossiers; state iron dextran, iron sucrose or ferric carboxymaltose in every enquiry. It is a prescription-only sterile product registered with a CTD or ACTD dossier, in glass ampoules or vials, commonly 2 mL and 10 mL, usually stored below 25 °C and not frozen. Ask for a batch CoA with iron content, molecular weight distribution, sterility and endotoxins, plus GMP and CoPP. Molecular weight matters, as high molecular weight dextran carries more reaction risk.

Frequently Asked Questions
Iron is used to treat iron-deficiency anaemia in patients who cannot tolerate oral iron or need rapid correction of low iron levels. It helps restore iron stores and supports normal haemoglobin and red blood cell production.
It is made from iron–carbohydrate complexes such as ferric hydroxide combined with polymers like dextran, sucrose, carboxymaltose, or derisomaltose, depending on the specific formulation.
Trade names vary and may include products like Venofer, Infed, Injectafer, Ferinject, Monofer, and similar iron formulations marketed globally.
Multiple pharmaceutical companies manufacture iron formulations worldwide, including Vifor Pharma, Pharmacosmos, American Regent, and several global generic manufacturers.
The generic name is Iron, commonly available as iron sucrose, iron dextran, ferric carboxymaltose, ferric derisomaltose, or other iron complexes.
Brand names include Venofer, Infed, Injectafer, Ferinject, Monofer, and others depending on the region and formulation.
It is manufactured in many countries globally by approved pharmaceutical companies producing various iron formulations.
