Halobetasol topical is used to help relieve redness, itching, swelling, or other discomfort caused by certain skin conditions. It is also used to treat plaque psoriasis. This medicine is a corticosteroid (cortisone-like medicine or steroid).

Product Description:

Halobetasol propionate is an ultra-high-potency topical corticosteroid, classified as Class I (superpotent) in the United States classification and equivalent categories elsewhere. Potency of this order carries a corresponding constraint: treatment is generally limited to two consecutive weeks and to a defined maximum weekly quantity, because systemic absorption sufficient to suppress the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis is achievable with sustained use over larger surface areas.

Its principal indication is plaque psoriasis and other corticosteroid-responsive dermatoses that have not responded to lower-potency agents. It is supplied as cream, ointment and lotion at 0.05%, with a 0.01% lotion approved in some markets for extended use, and in fixed combination with tazarotene.

Sourcing notes. Vehicle selection is not cosmetic. Ointment, cream and lotion differ in corticosteroid bioavailability at the same nominal strength, so they are not interchangeable in a tender and should not be quoted as though they were. Strength is expressed inconsistently across markets, sometimes as percentage and sometimes as mg per gram, and confirming the basis in writing avoids a common specification error. Topical semisolid manufacture requires appropriate plant approval and, for regulated markets, in-vitro release testing data as part of the dossier.
