Product Description:
Ethiodized Oil, also known as Lipiodol, is a synthetic iodine-containing derivative of the ethyl esters of poppyseed oil fatty acids, with 37% organically bound iodine. It is primarily used as a radiopaque contrast medium for diagnostic imaging, providing clear visualization of organs such as the liver, lungs, stomach, and thyroid during radiological investigations. Due to its selective retention in tumor vessels, it is also utilized in interventional procedures to deliver localized therapy, and when labeled with radioactive isotopes like I-131, Y-90, or P-32, it can act as an antineoplastic agent, delivering targeted radiation to tumors while minimizing effects on healthy tissues.
Lipiodol is available as a sterile injectable solution and can be used in a variety of clinical applications, including gastric variceal obliteration and, in select regions, as an oral or intramuscular supplement to prevent endemic goiter. Its oily nature allows it to serve as a diluent in procedures without interfering with other therapeutic agents. Caution is required during use, as intravenous entry may cause embolism in the brain or lungs, and it is contraindicated for hysterosalpingography during pregnancy. Ethiodized Oil combines diagnostic utility with therapeutic potential, making it a versatile agent in modern medicine.
