Product Description:
Perflutren lipid microspheres are supplied as a sterile injectable suspension designed for use as a contrast agent in diagnostic ultrasound imaging. The formulation consists of liposome-encapsulated microspheres containing the fluorocarbon gas perflutren. These microspheres are administered intravenously to enhance ultrasound image quality during clinical procedures, particularly in cardiovascular imaging.
Perflutren lipid microspheres work by exploiting the difference in acoustic impedance between the perflutren gas and surrounding blood. Because the acoustic impedance of the microspheres is significantly lower than that of blood, incoming ultrasound waves are strongly scattered and reflected at the microsphere–blood interface. This interaction produces a marked increase in echogenicity, allowing clearer visualization of blood flow, cardiac chambers, and endocardial borders.
The enhanced contrast provided by perflutren lipid microspheres improves diagnostic accuracy in patients with suboptimal baseline ultrasound images. The microspheres remain within the vascular space and are rapidly eliminated after imaging, with the perflutren gas exhaled through the lungs. This targeted, transient contrast effect makes perflutren lipid microspheres a valuable tool for real-time ultrasound contrast enhancement in routine clinical practice.
