Product Description:

Epirubicin is an anthracycline, a stereoisomer of doxorubicin differing only in the orientation of a single hydroxyl group on the sugar. That small change speeds hepatic clearance, which allows higher doses to be given for the same cardiac risk. It kills by intercalating into DNA and by poisoning topoisomerase II, so the enzyme cuts the strand and cannot rejoin it, and it generates free radicals that damage membranes.

Its principal use is adjuvant and metastatic breast cancer, generally within combination regimens, with further roles in gastric, ovarian, lung and soft tissue tumours, and as an intravesical instillation after transurethral resection of bladder tumours. Cumulative dose-dependent cardiomyopathy is the defining risk and requires a lifetime dose ceiling with baseline and periodic echocardiography. Myelosuppression, alopecia, mucositis and red discolouration of urine follow. Extravasation causes severe tissue necrosis.

Solution presentations require refrigeration; powder does not. Intravesical use is a separate market with its own tender cycle.
