Dexamethasone is a long-acting synthetic glucocorticoid with essentially no mineralocorticoid activity, a property that separates it from hydrocortisone and prednisolone and makes it preferable where sodium and water retention would be unwelcome. Its anti-inflammatory potency is roughly twenty-five to thirty times that of hydrocortisone on a milligram basis, and its biological half-life of thirty-six to fifty-four hours permits less frequent dosing.

The injectable presentation is most commonly supplied as dexamethasone sodium phosphate at 4 mg per mL, suitable for intravenous, intramuscular, intra-articular and soft-tissue administration. Dexamethasone appears on the WHO Model List of Essential Medicines, and demand rose substantially following its adoption in severe respiratory infection protocols.

Sourcing notes. This is one of the highest-volume injectable corticosteroids in global tender procurement, and consequently one of the most price-competitive. Registration status is near-universal, so lead time and plant approval usually decide the award rather than dossier availability. Confirm whether the quoted product is the sodium phosphate ester or the acetate suspension — they are not interchangeable, differ in route and duration, and tender specifications sometimes conflate them. For institutional and government supply, ampoule versus vial presentation and the required shelf life at receipt are usually the terms that decide compliance with the tender.
