Product Description:

Cyclopentolate is a topical antimuscarinic that paralyses the ciliary muscle and dilates the pupil. Blocking muscarinic receptors in the iris sphincter and ciliary body removes the eye's ability to accommodate, which is the point: to measure refractive error accurately in children, whose strong accommodation otherwise masks hyperopia, the ciliary muscle must be temporarily switched off.

It is used for cycloplegic refraction and for dilating the pupil before examination, and therapeutically in anterior uveitis, where paralysing the ciliary muscle relieves the pain of spasm and prevents the iris adhering to the lens. Effect begins within about half an hour and accommodation takes six to twenty-four hours to recover, with pupil dilation lasting longer. Absorbed drug causes antimuscarinic effects, and in infants and small children these can be marked — flushing, fever, agitation, hallucinations and, rarely, convulsions — which is why the lowest effective concentration is used in that group and the 2% strength is avoided in infants.
