Product Description:

This oral rinse and gargle contains chlorhexidine gluconate at 0.12% or 0.2%. Chlorhexidine is a cationic bisbiguanide antiseptic that disrupts bacterial cell membranes. It also clings to teeth, gums and oral mucosa and is released slowly, so one rinse keeps acting for hours, which has made it the reference agent for chemical plaque control. The 0.12% strength is standard in North America as a 15 mL dose; 0.2% is common in Europe as a 10 mL dose.

It is used alongside brushing for plaque control and gingivitis, for oral hygiene when brushing is difficult, as after oral surgery or in intubated patients, and for denture stomatitis and mouth ulcers. Patients rinse or gargle for 30 seconds to a minute, twice daily, then spit out. Toothpaste ingredients such as sodium lauryl sulfate can inactivate it, so an interval after brushing is advised. Tooth and tongue staining and altered taste are common. Rare serious allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, carry a regulatory warning.

Status differs by market: the 0.12% rinse is prescription-only in the United States, 0.2% mouthwash is sold without prescription in many countries, and some markets class mouthwashes as cosmetics. Expect a CTD or ACTD dossier where it is a medicine, with zone IVb stability data for hot humid markets. Opaque bottles or cartons shield the solution from light, and no cold chain is needed.
