Product Description:

Hexetidine is a broad-spectrum antiseptic with antibacterial and antifungal activity, used topically in the mouth and throat. It disrupts microbial membranes and interferes with thiamine-dependent metabolism in susceptible organisms. Its practical advantage over some alternatives is substantivity — it binds to the oral mucosa and to dental plaque and continues acting for several hours after rinsing, rather than being washed away immediately.

The 0.1% mouthwash is used for minor mouth and throat infections, mouth ulcers, gingivitis, sore throat and general oral hygiene, and after dental procedures. It is used undiluted as a rinse or gargle, typically twice daily, and is not swallowed. It is generally well tolerated; transient taste disturbance and a burning sensation are the usual complaints, and rare hypersensitivity has been reported. Unlike chlorhexidine it does not cause the brown tooth staining that limits long-term use of that agent.

Sourcing notes. Off patent and widely available, classified as an over-the-counter medicine in most markets and as a cosmetic in a few. Supplied in several bottle sizes, and the alcohol content differs between formulations — an alcohol-free version matters for paediatric use, for patients with oral mucositis, and for markets where alcohol content restricts sale.
