Cabergoline is a long-acting dopamine D2 receptor agonist. It is primarily used to treat high prolactin levels (hyperprolactinemia), which can cause infertility, menstrual disorders, and galactorrhea. It is also used in some cases for Parkinson’s disease and other endocrine or neurological conditions. Cabergoline works by stimulating dopamine receptors, which reduces prolactin secretion from the pituitary gland.

Product Description:

Cabergoline is an ergoline dopamine D2 agonist with a very long elimination half-life, of the order of sixty to a hundred hours. That half-life is what allows once- or twice-weekly dosing in hyperprolactinaemia, and it is the main reason cabergoline has replaced bromocriptine as first-line therapy for prolactinomas: normalisation of prolactin and tumour shrinkage are achieved more often, with less nausea and postural hypotension.

A single 1 mg dose is also used to prevent lactation after delivery where breastfeeding is not intended or is contraindicated. The key safety issue comes from its other pharmacology: cabergoline is a 5-HT2B agonist, and at the high daily doses once used in Parkinson's disease it caused fibrotic cardiac valvulopathy. At endocrine doses the risk is far lower, but echocardiographic screening before and during long-term treatment is still recommended, and it is contraindicated where valvular fibrosis already exists.

Sourcing notes. Generic, widely registered and low-volume by weight — the 0.5 mg tablet is dispensed in packs of a handful, not hundreds. Tablets are moisture-sensitive and conventionally supplied in glass bottles with desiccant rather than blisters, which matters for packaging specifications and stability data.
